To Be a Nation Again
What?
a film by Ben Kempas

Every second Scot wants independence for Scotland.
Will it happen soon?

Nationalism causes bloodshed all over Europe.
Why not in Scotland?

Scotland has now got its first parliament in 300 years.
Why is it not enough?´

The Scotsman: Scotland makes history
TO BE A NATION AGAIN
is a film about
the Scottish National Party

in the run-up to the first democratic
Scottish Parliament Elections ever.
We have followed
five candidates of the SNP
during the 100 days
to the elections on 6 May 1999,
finishing with the results.
Duncan Hamilton
Margaret Ewing
From strategy meetings
to street canvassing,
the promise not to show the film
before the elections
has given us an insight
into the work of the candidates
which otherwise
would not have been possible.
Trailing the Scottish candidates
across their constituencies,
we also want to know what the
locals think about independence:
from fishermen in Shetland
to genetic engineers in Midlothian.
Dolly the Sheep
Alex Salmond, Sean Connery, Winnie Ewing
We also feature
SNP leader Alex Salmond and
'Madame Ecosse' Winnie Ewing,
president of the party.

Yet their best known member
remains Sean Connery...

Comments
Scotland 99 - To Be a Nation Again
What?

Marc Glassman, Hotdocs: Very strong. Sort of a Scottish 'War Room'.
Douglas Fraser, SundayHerald: A rare glimpse of the Nat-ural world ...  Benjamin Kempas, the director, lets his lens linger longer than some might like, giving us some fine moments of comedy.
